Jungfrau’n Spaziergang - Virgin Walk

Es war unser Erstes Mal … with the Hash House Harriers. Our dear German friend Hanna, invited us to a walk. We have never heard about Has House Harriers before, and loving to travel and meet new people we were keen to do it!
We were welcomed by very friendly Antiguans and also met people from all over the world participating in the walk/run. We all gathered as the Hashmaster gave a little speech. All the ‘Virgin Hashers’ introduced themselves – Australia, Belize, Guadeloupe, England, Deutschland, Namibia… to mention only a few. Kat, from Germany and standing out as the girl with the longest legs, was chosen to be the new scribe. She got a long and heavy stick that looked like a huge pencil. As it was so heavy, she put it aside.
So the walk started. There are some very keen ones in the group. Keen and fit and good at finding paper snippets along the way. Often the sound of a cow horn was blasting, so we all new where they were and how far ahead. We were talking so much that eventually we formed the tail of the large group- the very last bit of the tail. Hashmaster Derik was so kind and waited for us a few times. He photographed us and showed us the delicious Domp Tree., after we tried some on the way. We were also taught the differences between the Domp and the Poisonous Tree. A valuable piece of information. Soon he jogged light-footed to the head of the group again.
The walk took us 1,5 hours through the lovely Antiguan countryside, talking all the time. The yellow grass and acacia trees reminded Namibian Esther of Africa, it felt like home. When we arrived people were already having drinks and food. We soon joined in. The Roti’s we had were the best by far, that we had in Antigua so far; the beer incredibly refreshing to our melting hot bodies. Everyone was in happy spirits. The hospitable Hash Master had a chat with us and took a picture of us 3 ‘Germans’ together. Vielen Dank!
Not long we Virgins were asked to come forward and form a little half circle around a nun in running shoes! A kind lady whispered to us that we must choose the ‘smallest’ drink, as we were warned that we had to down them and what ever is left over would be dumped over our heads. So we as German and Namibian-German chose the ice-cold beer. We kneeled in front of the nun on little stones that were very sharp. Then all the old (and young) Hashers sang that Virgin Song for us, and before it was finished we had to be done with the drink. Esther was so afraid that she was the only one who would not be finished that she gulped it down – she hardly ever drinks a bottle of beer. Kat missed the part that what ever is left would be poured over her, and as it is her nature, she took everything in a relaxed way. The song stopped, and the funny nun in running shoes, poured beer over us anyway! And then Kat was ‘punished’ with another beer, because she didn’t take the larger than life walking pencil with her!
Unfortunately we had to leave soon afterwards. It was a lovely experience, and should we come across a Hash House Harrier Walk somewhere in this beautiful world again – we shall definitely join it. Thank you for making it a memorable experience. We still laugh when we think about the crazy walk!

Es war wunderbar! Herzlichen Dank.
